ARTIST STATEMENT
The world itself is a system built upon stories and revolves around them. Behind every law lies the story of how they came to be enacted. Politics is a constant collision of competing stories. When closely observed, every aspect of the system unveils itself as a narrative. And, of course, each individual within the system is a story. Every life lived is a story. Homo Fictus—a human whose existence is inseparable from narrative construction—creates, consumes, spreads, desires, and distorts stories.
And the way stories shape the world is paradoxical: they form it through collision, corrosion, and collapse; stability is achieved through destabilization; their turbulence maintains the flight of the world. For example, laws are rewritten when other stories collide with and cause the stories behind existing laws to collapse. My story here, too, collapses when perceived by people with different stories.
Collapse is not the end—it sets the world in motion. This paradox is where my journey, Xeno-present (Indulgence in the Strange), begins.
The paradox is embodied through painting: the dynamics of collision and collapse are inscribed onto a static surface. The works I create—the stories captured on canvas—remain inert until they collide with viewers. They collapse to persist.
모든 이야기는 결국 무너진다. 그리고 우리가 사는 세상은 무너지는 이야기들로 건설된다.
세상은 이야기들 위에 세워진 하나의 시스템이며, 이야기들을 중심으로 움직인다. 어떠한 법의 이면에는 그것이 제정되기까지의 서사가 존재하며, 정치는 서로 다른 이야기들의 끊임없는 충돌이다. 자세히 살펴보면, 세상의 모든 것은 본질적으로 이야기를 품고 있다. 물론 그 시스템 속에 살아가는 개인 또한 예외가 아니다. 모든 인간의 삶이 이야기이며, 이야기와 불가분한 존재인 인간, 호모 픽투스는 끊임없이 이야기를 창조하고, 소비하며, 퍼뜨리고, 왜곡한다.
주목할 만한 점은 이야기가 세상을 구축하는 방식이 모순적이라는 것이다. 이야기는 충돌과 침식, 몰락을 통해 세상을 지탱한다. 이야기들의 충돌이 만들어내는 난기류 속에서 세상은 비행을 유지한다. 예를 들어, 법은 또 다른 이야기가 기존의 이야기와 충돌하고 그것을 무너뜨릴 때 다시 쓰인다. 그리고 지금 이곳에서의 나의 이야기 또한 읽히는 순간 무너진다.
무너짐은 끝이 아니다. 그것은 세상을 움직이는 동력이다. 이 역설이 프로젝트 “Xeno-present: 낯선 것들에 대한 탐닉”의 출발점이다.
무너짐으로써 구축되는 세계의 역설을, 나는 회화를 통해 구현한다. 충돌과 몰락의 역학이 정적인 캔버스 표면 위에 새겨지는 순간, 역설도 함께 새겨지며, 관객들과 충돌하기를 기다린다. 나의 작업들 또한 이야기이며, 무너짐으로써 지속된다.
